Celebrating Literacy: United Way Turks and Caicos’ “Once Upon a Time”

On December 3rd, 2024, the United Way Turks and Caicos hosted a heartwarming evening under the enchanting theme “Once Upon a Time.” The event brought together supporters, donors, volunteers, and the students who inspire the organization’s impactful charity work.

The celebration highlighted the transformative “Yes I Can Read” program, which has been a beacon of hope for countless primary school students in the public sector. This program plays a critical role in fostering grade-level reading skills, an essential foundation for mastering other important subjects like Math and Science.

Research shows that students who are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade face significant risks of falling behind academically, with many never fully catching up. The United Way’s mission is clear: ensure every child has the support they need to unlock their full reading potential.

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our partners at Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty for sponsoring this year’s Back-to-School event, and to all of the agents who volunteered and dedicated their time and effort to ensure its success. This event was truly a community effort, and we couldn’t have done it without your support.

We were able to distribute nearly 330 backpacks to local students throughout the primary and secondary schools including Enid Capron Primary School, Ianthe Pratt Primary School, Oseta Jolly Primary School, and Elite High School.

Latoya began her career in real estate in the early 2000’s witnessing the changing landscape of TCI Real Estate with her involvement in pre-construction sales of the many developments on Grace Bay Beach, luxury Villas, commercial properties, and vacant land.

During the economic slowdown in 2007 Latoya took respite off island by accomplishing other goals and then returned home to Providenciales in 2021 as the real estate market was flourishing. United Way Turks and Caicos Reading Program

Reading matters – Reading proficiently by 3rd grade can be life changing. Third grade is when children make the crucial switch from learning to reading to learn.

Grade level reading skills enables children to begin mastering other important subjects like Math & Science.  Students who are not reading proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are at great risk of falling behind & never fully catching up.  So we need your help to ensure that our children are reading at their full potential.

“Yes I Can Read” Reading Intervention 

We have 3rd graders that are reading at kindergarten level.  Help us to eradicate this literacy challenge. By giving to the reading program, you will help surround the young students with programs and resources needed to ensure they are reading by 3rd grade.

Sponsor a Child 

The Yes I Can Read After School program will facilitate 50 students yearly at a cost of $360 per month per child for the one on one intervention with a private tutor.  This sets the program budget to $216,000 per year.  Let us join forces to combat this serious literacy issue and create Bold, Intelligent and Fearless future leaders.

On February 28th, 2024, four students from Elite High Secondary School, accompanied by their head teacher, visited Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty to convey their gratitude for the generous donation made to the school. 

Dyenyca Joseph, Roselove Til, Francisca Alexandre, Jovelane Francois, along with their head teacher Mr. Lumarvens Alexander, presented Joe Zahm, President and Broker, and Nina Siegenthaler, Vice President and Broker, with a plaque, speeches, and a video showcasing the school’s deep appreciation.

“I am very grateful for the donation made by Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty. The donation has helped the entire school with our projects, school-based assessments, and has enhanced our understanding of computers and kept us up to date with our work,” said Roselove Til.

Elite High School: Striving against adversity

Elite High School is an exceptional institution that refuses to dwell on students’ backgrounds, legal status, economic situations and social standings. Since 2016, Elite High School has been making significant changes in the lives of hundreds of Haitian and Dominican children. Their motto, “Striving against adversity,” perfectly encapsulates this daily dedication as they aim to overcome all social barriers. 

Despite limited resources and minimal support from the local government, the principal, teachers and other faculty members are tirelessly working against all odds to provide each student with a platform for a quality education.

On the 5th of June, Richard Sankar, Broker and Director of Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty attended Elite High School’s annual career day. Richard, who spoke to the entire school was moved by the sheer radiant and optimism of the students. This was the beginning of the journey_ a remarkable journey where both Richard together with Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty are commited to supporting the school so that they can be better equipped to educate their students.

Turks & Caicos Real Estate Association – TCREA 2023 Annual General Meeting

The TCREA Annual General Meeting of 2023, held on November 16th, 2023, at Opus, garnered a positive response with the Conference Room brimming with agents.

The Executive Members for 2022/2023 expressed formal gratitude as they concluded a successful year. The former Vice President, Robert Greenwood, Director & Senior Broker at the Regency-Christie’s International Real Estate extended thanks to each agent and broker for their contributions throughout the year. He encouraged everyone to strive for even greater achievements as they embark on a dedicated new era, emphasizing the importance of more volunteers for the association’s betterment. “I know everyone is busy, but the association needs you,” he stressed.

Joe Zahm, the President of Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty, acknowledged Veronica Delancy at Keller Williams Turks and Caicos Real Estate for arranging successful open house tours each year. Joe also highlighted the success of the TCREA/MLS, positioning it as one of the most sophisticated MLS systems in the Caribbean.

The TCREA Office Administrator and MLS Coordinator, Ashley Simmons later conducted the formal voting for the new 2024 Executive Committee. Several agents were nominated for the roles of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Following a mix of self-nominations and votes, the 2024 Executive Committee was announced:

  • Vice President: Latoya Jones-Harvey, Grace Bay Realty

The AGM meeting adjourned with a strong sense of accomplishment. The newly elected President, Ian Hurdle, expressed his commitment to the role, pledging to follow in the footsteps of the outstanding presidents who preceded him.
